Welcome to The Children's Bookshop

Visit us at our Kilbirnie shop or place your order on-line using the search function above.

The Children's Bookshop is a privately owned independent specialist bookstore dedicated to providing the widest range of children's and young adult literature from New Zealand and around the world.

The owners, John and Ruth McIntyre, and their staff (see About Us) are passionate about reading and are always willing to share their knowledge with their customers.
We are experts at matching children with books, and get the greatest pleasure at finding reading for children who aren't traditionally readers.
In 2003 The Children's Bookshop was named New Zealand's Independent Bookshop of the year, the first time it has ever been awarded to a specialist bookstore, and was runner-up to Unity Books of Wellington for the same award in 2008.

Tween Queen Cathy Cassidy's visit to our store

We were delighted to host British writer Cathy Cassidy, author of popular novels such as Ginger Snaps, Dizzy, Indigo Blue, Lucky Star and her latest book Angel Cake, on her May 26th visit to Wellington. Cathy spoke to several hundred girls at two school events and also visited our store to meet her fans and sign copies of her books (see our Photos and Events).
Cathy's stories focus on friendship, dreams, belonging, family dramas and social injustices and are wonderful reads for girls, especially, aged 10 plus.
Her new novel, Angel Cake, is about Anya, a Polish girl who moves to England and is ostracised at school. Entranced by "bad boy" Dan, she's sure there's a sweeter side to him. Can Anya find true friendship among the misfits at the new Heaven Cafe?

Storytime with Marie

Join us at 10.30am Fridays for 30 minutes of stories and music with ace storyteller Marie Murdoch. There's a lucky draw every week, plus discount vouchers for coffee or tea at Love a Coffee Cafe opposite our store. The books Marie reads are available to buy that day with a 10% discount off the normal price. Children aged 2 to 5, with their caregivers, are welcome.

Special Orders
As well as carrying a huge range of contemporary literature we also stock childhood favourites from the past, and excel at sourcing hard-to-find books from around the world. Even if you have been told a title is out of print, please let us try to find it for you.

Please Note: Books found on our website do not necessarily reflect our current stock in the store. However, we are happy to order any book for you as long as it is in print.

Note also that when ordering through our website, we can process only Visa and Mastercard credit cards.

Newsletter
We produce a high-quality customer newsletter 3 times a year, in March, July and November, keeping you up to date with reviews of the latest titles available. Let us know if you would like us to mail it to you.

Schools
We have a considerable number of schools and public libraries who are regular customers, for whom we produce a collection of newsletters once a term. In them we review new books that we believe are must-haves - fiction and non-fiction - and we are happy to add you to our mailing list.

Addicts' Club
Join our Addicts' Club - our special way of saying thank you to all our customer "addicts" who have been wonderfully loyal in the 15 years since we started the store.
Spend a minimum $500 (that's a rough average of about 25 books!) on any non-sale or non-discounted items - books and toys (except Booksellers' New Zealand book tokens) - in the store between mid-November and mid-November the next year and we will then send you a voucher worth 10% of your total purchases to spend at any time.
We will also invite you to an Addicts' Club pre-Christmas shopping night where you may spend your voucher, enjoy the Christmas spirit with a drink and nibbles, and be in the draw to win parcels of superb books.
Ask to join next time you visit.
