Welcome to The Children's Bookshop

Visit us at our Kilbirnie shop or place your order on-line using the search function above.

The Children's Bookshop is a privately owned independent specialist bookstore dedicated to providing the widest range of children's and young adult literature from New Zealand and around the world.

The owners, John and Ruth McIntyre, and their staff (see About Us) are passionate about reading and are always willing to share their knowledge with their customers.

We are experts at matching children with books, and get the greatest pleasure at finding reading for children who aren't traditionally readers.

In 2003 The Children's Bookshop was named New Zealand's Independent Bookshop of the year, the first time it has ever been awarded to a specialist bookstore, and was runner-up to Unity Books of Wellington for the same award in 2008.

Book Launch for Fierce September - September 9th

The book launch for Fierce September, the sequel to Fleur Beale's award-winning Juno of Taris, will be at The Children's Bookshop on Thursday, September 9th from 6pm.

The story continues with Juno and the Taris inhabitants having to leave their dying island. The young people look forward to a wider life Outside, but Outside too has its problems. It is two-year-old Hera, with her uncanny ability to foresee events, who saves the Taris people from the injury and death prepared for them by an underground group of protesters.
The people of Taris, though, have no choice but to try to live in this seemingly hostile place.

If you would like to attend, please phone (04 387-3905) or email us at the above address for catering purposes.

Mr Astrosaur, Steve Cole, in-store Friday, September 10th

Steve Cole, the "ever-scribbling, slightly crazy" author of lots of series, such as

Astrosaurs
Astrosaurs Academy
Cows in Action (CIA)
Slime Squad (new)
Z-Rex (new)
Tripwire
(with Chris Hunter, for readers aged 12 plus)

will be visiting our store on

Friday, September 10th from 4pm until 4.30pm

to meet his fans and sign copies of his books (both pre-owned and new).

This is a free event and don't forget to bring a camera.

Just Andy Griffiths!

Top-selling Australian author Andy Griffiths (Just Crazy; Just Disgusting; Just Macbeth etc; The Day My Bum Went Psycho series; Schooling Around series; The Bad Book) will be speaking at an evening event in Wellington on

Tuesday, October 19th at Evans Bay Intermediate School starting at 6pm.

Andy's books have sold over four million copies worldwide since his first, Just Tricking, was launched in 1997, and he has won more than 40 Australian children's choice awards in the last 10 years.

Andy's "Just" series in particular, with their silly, anarchic humour and Terry Denton's "demented doodles", have been credited with turning thousands of reluctant boys on to reading.

Andy's new book, The Very Bad Book ($19), will be released in New Zealand on September 10th and all his books will be available for sale at the event.

Admission is $5 per ticket and these can now be purchased from us at The Children's Bookshop. If you are paying by cheque or credit card, there will be a $1 surcharge per transaction to cover fees and postage of tickets. Please also include your address and a contact phone number.

All proceeds will go to the Pakistan Flood Relief Fund.

When: Tuesday, October 18th 2010

Where: Evans Bay Intermediate School hall, Kemp Street, Kilbirnie, Wellington.

Time: From 6pm until about 8pm

Note: Andy will be delighted to sign both pre-owned and new copies of his books after his talk.

Contact us at the email address above or on Phone (04) 387-3905 for further details.

Storytime with Marie

Join us at 10.30am Fridays for 30 minutes of stories and music with ace storyteller Marie Murdoch. There's a lucky draw every week, plus discount vouchers for coffee or tea at Love a Coffee Cafe opposite our store. The books Marie reads are available to buy that day with a 10% discount off the normal price. Children aged 2 to 5, with their caregivers, are welcome.

Special Orders
As well as carrying a huge range of contemporary literature we also stock childhood favourites from the past, and excel at sourcing hard-to-find books from around the world. Even if you have been told a title is out of print, please let us try to find it for you.

Please Note: Books found on our website do not necessarily reflect our current stock in the store. However, we are happy to order any book for you as long as it is in print.

Note also that when ordering through our website, we can process only Visa and Mastercard credit cards.

Newsletter
We produce a high-quality customer newsletter 3 times a year, in March, July and November, keeping you up to date with reviews of the latest titles available. Let us know if you would like us to mail it to you.

Schools
We have a considerable number of schools and public libraries who are regular customers, for whom we produce a collection of newsletters once a term. In them we review new books that we believe are must-haves - fiction and non-fiction - and we are happy to add you to our mailing list.

Addicts' Club
Join our Addicts' Club - our special way of saying thank you to all our customer "addicts" who have been wonderfully loyal in the 15 years since we started the store.

Spend a minimum $500 (that's a rough average of about 25 books!) on any non-sale or non-discounted items - books and toys (except Booksellers' New Zealand book tokens) - in the store between mid-November and mid-November the next year and we will then send you a voucher worth 10% of your total purchases to spend at any time.

We will also invite you to an Addicts' Club pre-Christmas shopping night where you may spend your voucher, enjoy the Christmas spirit with a drink and nibbles, and be in the draw to win parcels of superb books.

Ask to join next time you visit.
