Invaders : Animals From Elsewhere That Are Causing Trouble Here (Nic's New Zealand Nature) order quantity
  +   -

NZ$ 20.00 each
Paperback
Author: Nicola Vallance Photograpy by Rod Morris (photos)
In Stock: 0
Customer Order Reference:
New Zealand is under attack. The 'invaders' of the title are the animals from overseas that have made New Zealand their home - often by human hand and usually with disastrous consequences for the local wildlife. Some of the best-loved newcomers are the worst offenders - cats, mice, hedgehogs, dogs, possums - and between them they have snuffed out untold numbers of native animals and plants. This book dishes out home truths and fascinating insights that will encourage children to take a fresh look at the environment and how to protect it. The book also features approximately 100 full-colour photographs.

This title is the first in a new series of books for 9-14-year-olds, using a fresh approach to present major themes in animal ecology and behaviour.

Dear Alison : A New Zealand Soldier's Story From Stalag 383 order quantity
  +   -
NZ$ 30.00 each
Hardback
Author: Edited by Simon Pollard
In Stock: 18
Customer Order Reference:
In July 1942 with a notebook and pencil he had bought from a German guard, Dudley Muff started Alison's Book. Dudley was 42 and a prisoner of war in Stalag XVIIIB in Germany and his niece Alison was four and living in Timaru. It starts "Dear Alison, Mummy has told you all about Uncle being a prisoner, so now I must tell you what we do to pass the time."
With humorous entries, sketches and what he called "little men" his story grew until it became an unbelievable account of his time served in two prisoner-of-war camps. Given to Alison when he returned to Christchurch after the war, she read it first as a child, purely for the excitement such a story could impart.
Only later, rereading this as an adult, did she see through the veiled references to how life really was in the camps. After returning to Christchurch, Dudley added a one page postscript describing his journey to freedom. He finished the book with, "Now I shall ... more

Nga Taonga Takaro : Maori Sports and Games order quantity
  +   -
NZ$ 40.00 each
Paperback
Author: Harko Brown
In Stock: 0
Customer Order Reference:
In Nga Taonga Takaro, Harko Brown writes about the revival of more than 20 ancient games and sports of the Maori - including poi, stick games, kites, ball games, memory games, and board games. He traces the history and legend behind each game, and gives clear instructions on how to play, the rules of the game, and how to create the equipment used. The games are illustrated with action colour photographs throughout, to enhance readers' understanding of these indigenous sports. Traditional Maori games were used to transfer skills and techniques from playgrounds to battlefields, to promote learning in wananga, to problem-solve everyday situations, and to pass on the values and intellect from one generation to the next.
In Nga Taonga Takaro, the games have been adapted for a contemporary audience - individual and team sports for schools, community groups, marae and workplace.

First published July 2008.

A History of Gardening in New Zealand order quantity
  +   -
NZ$ 50.00 each
Paperback
Author: Bee Dawson
In Stock: 0
Customer Order Reference:
An Englishman's home is his castle, but for the first European settlers who came to New Zealand, their first priority was to create a productive and, later, ornamental garden. Bee Dawson traces the development of gardening in New Zealand, from the Maori gardens of pre - and early contact times through the optimistic efforts of missionaries and the other early settlers, the magnificence and productivity of the Victorians and Edwardians and the Dig for Victory campaigns of the 1940s. Illustrated throughout with historic photographs, paintings and ephemera, Dawson's lively writing style brings to life the successes and failures and the sense of achivement felt by New Zealand gardeners through the years, as they coaxed plenty and beauty from a new earth. This book is both beautiful to look at and a delight to read.
